ISC/IAC motors can fail and cause
irreparable failure to the ECM. Most Dealerships as well as our technicians
recommend replacing your ISC when the ECM engine control computer is repaired or
replaced.
Symptoms of failing ISC control
motor include: idle surge, failure to idle up on cold start, idle oscillation
with engine idle revving up & back between approximately 900 to 1500 rpm's at
idle (which should be around 850 with engine at operating temperature) or an
unresponsive high or low idle. The car should compensate and idle up when the
a/c compressor, power steering or when fan is running. It's likely you'll need
to replace this at some point in your Mitsubishi.
Idle Speed Control Motor
Location
The ISC is on the rear side of the
throttle body, on top of the engine toward the back. It has a tan plastic plug
connecting to the harness (some late models are black plastic.) The other half
of it (the moving part) is sticking inside the throttle body.

The ISC is a series of coils which can fail and cause damage to
your electrical system and your ECM. Shown here is the six (6) pins that
comprise the coil configuration. We can also give instructions on how to
test many models of ISC motors with a simple multi-meter to see if it has failed
internally.
Replacement of ISC and ECM does not guarantee your troubles are
over. Check complete ignition & electrical systems before reinserting your ECM unit. Many times
our technicians can tell by the damage on the ECM motherboard if the ISC was likely to have caused the damage. We can
also test the ISC for proper function.
The unwritten rule with DSM
Mitsubishi's is to replace ISC with ECM or between 50,000-75,000 miles,
change engine oil and coolant every 3,000-5000 miles, change
timing belt between 50,000-65,000 miles & change cam seals and valve stem seals (DSM 1st
Gen) between 75,000-100,000 miles.

Diagnosing your Mass Air
Flow Meter:
The purpose of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter directly measures the mass
of air flowing into the engine. It is located between the air filter and the
throttle body assembly. The MAF operates on the principle that if a mass is
maintained at a constant temperature above ambient, the thermal loss is
proportional to the mass flow of the cooling medium it is subjected to.
The sensor output is a DC (analog) signal ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 volts used by
the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA) to calculate fuel injector pulse width for
stoichiometry (14.7 to 1). The "Hot Wire" is maintained at 392? F (200? C) above
ambient temperature as measured by a constant "Cold Wire".
The first indication of a MAF failure is the "Check Engine" light on the
dash will come on and stay on.
Some symptoms of Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter failure is a rich or lean mixture
depending on what is happening in the unit. The Oxygen Sensor will try to
compensate for some of the activity through the computer but once the system
goes out of preset bounds the "Check Engine" light will turn on. If the Throttle
Position Sensor (TPS) is failing you may notice a flat spot while accelerating
lightly away from traffic light and at cruising speeds. The check engine light
may or may not come on depending on the programming in the ECM. If the Air
Temperature switch fails the check engine light will turn on.
If the check engine light is not on and you are experiencing hesitation,
flooding, hard starting, or the smell of gas, check the air filter, fuel filter,
and plugs & wires. There are no sensors built in to the system that will tell if
these parts are failing. If a cylinder is not firing as caused by a shorting
plug wire the system goes full rich. It gives you great power but it greatly
reduces your fuel economy of your vehicle and the converter gets very hot and
can become damaged.

losing the visual on your climate control display. The A/C system will
function and control with the touch of the buttons however. The Lexus
ES300 & LS400 & Camry models specifically can loose the fan control as well as
the display functions. We offer fast 1-2 day repair service for
$250.00 a fraction of the dealer list of $1200.00. We offer replacement
units as well when available in inventory which may incur an additional core
fee.
